David Fell is Emeritus Professor of Systems Biology in the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences at Oxford Brookes University. After studying biochemistry at Oxford University, followed by a DPhil on the physical biochemistry of yeast pyruvate kinase, he started lecturing at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University).  His research moved from enzymology into a computer simulation and theoretical analysis of metabolic control, and he has written the only textbook on metabolic control analysis, Understanding the Control of Metabolism.  He has pioneered developments in the analysis of the structure of metabolic networks (such as elementary modes analysis), and his computer modelling has extended into signal transduction pathways and the cell cycle. Recent research projects have included genome-scale metabolic modelling of Arabidopsis, rice and several bacteria, most recently in connection with developing metabolic engineering strategies in bioenergy and industrial biotechnology projects.   
In 2001, he helped to found and became part-time Chief Scientific Officer of the Oxford company Physiomics plc, which is using a computer simulation of cellular systems for the development and analysis of therapeutic strategies for the pharmaceutical industry, mainly in cancer drug development.  
David has been a member of a number of editorial boards, including the Biochemical Journal, the European Journal of Biochemistry (FEBS Journal), Metabolic Engineering and Biochemical Society Transactions.  He was a long-standing member, and from 2012 to 2014, the chairman of the Policy Committee of the UK Biochemical Society.  For the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council in the UK, he has been a member of the Engineering and Biological Systems Committee, the Integrated and Systems Biology Strategy Panel (later as chair), the Strategy Board, and the Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy Strategy Panel.
