INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory

Jana B. Nieder
is the Head of Nanophotonics Department and Research Group Leader at INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. She is leading the “Ultrafast Bio- and Nanophotonics” research group, an interdisciplinary team of physicists, bioengineers and chemists. After her PhD in physics and a dissertation on pigment-protein interactions at the single molecule level evaluated with 'summa com laude' in 2011 at Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, she worked as postdoctoral researcher at ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona, Spain and at IGC- Institute Gulbenkian de Ciencia in Oeiras, Portugal in ultrafast single-molecule and super-resolution microscopy research, respectively. Jana’s research focuses on the development of new optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, using ultrafast sources, nanostructures or nanomaterials, such as nonlinear particles, plasmonic structures and similar.

Her interdisciplinary work has provided important insights into the intramolecular energy transfer processes in supramolecular photosynthetic complexes and their interactions with plasmonic structures. More recently at INL she led research in the area of bioimaging and nanomedicine research, specifically using femtosecond laser sources to explore cellular bioenergetics when exposed to nanodrug delivery systems or leading the development of a novel intracellular temperature sensing technique able to detect chemically - stimulated temperature changes at the mitochondria.
